Glossary of Terms and acronyms
Near Video on Demand:
Currently used to describe a staggered transmission of a single
TV programme such as a film. In the digital environment, a film
may be transmitted on different channels at a staggered 20 minute
start. Thus a consumer has a choice of when he/share can start watching
the film.
Network Access Point (NAP):
These are points on the Internet where national ISPs connect with
each other to move traffic on and off Internet backbone. NAPs include
MAE East and MAE West in the USA, LINX (London Internet Exchange)
and SIX (Singapore Internet Exchange).
Network PC:
New concept of personal computer which involves using a link to
a server on which virtually all the software and data are stored.
The aim is to reduce the cost of the PC because it needs less memory
and processing power and no hard disk.
Noise:
Any unwanted and unmodulated energy that is always present to some
extent within any signal.
